Jay's Virtual Duathlon (Day 54 of 100 Days Challenge)

Image
Day 54 of the challenge represented by Randy White (#54) My friend Jay (fellow Trail Nerd & Mud Babe) decided to set up a virtual indoor duathlon and invited me. I definitely thought it would be a fun way to do today's training. I really hope she sees this so she doesn't think I ditched her just because I'm not on Facebook right now. If you know Jay send her a message with a link so she can read this & if you are Jay and are reading this, leave me a comment and let me know you saw it and how your virtual duathlon went! First of all, I need to wrap up yesterday since I didn't post at all what I did. Yesterday ended up being an unwanted rest day. I tried to got to the YMCA after work for a long swim, but they closed early because of "bad weather." Didn't make sense since the snow from the day before had mostly melted from the streets and parking lot and the sun was out, but whatever. So all I ended up doing was 30 min of push ups, crunches, squat...

Day 52 of the 100 Days Challenge (AKA Winter Storm Q)

Image
Clicking on any of the pictures will let you see a larger version Well, what an interesting day! Last night we had Winter Storm Q (yes, they actually named this storm Q, not me) bearing down on us. The predicitons were grim. 10-15 inches of snow plus sleet and possibly even the dreaded freezing rain. Okay, sounds bad, sure, but I've been living in Kansas almost my entire life. I know how this work. 10-15 inches predicted = 2 inches actualy; 2 inches predicted = 10-15 inches actual. No biggie. I was more concerned with the possibility of freezing rain. With freezing rain comes very trecherous roads and often, power outages. It wasn't predicted to start until around midnight last night, so I went to bed not sure what I was going to wake up to find. I woke up to not much really. I got up at 6:15 am and it had just started to snow. It wasn't snowing terribly hard, but steady, and there was just a light dusting on the ground. Okay, this storm was WAY over predi...

Day 51 of the 100 Days Challenge

Image
When I decided to shut down my Facebook page indefinitely, some of my friends asked me to continue posting my daily workout updates on my blog since I can't post them on FB. I'm not sure why anyone is so interested in what I do for workouts on a day-to-day basis, but apparently a few folks are. That definitely makes me feel good and I really hope they draw some sort of inspiration from what I do. Well, as for today, it was officially day 51 of the 100 Days Challenge! Unofficially, it is my 52nd consecutive workout day. I worked out on New Year's Eve, but didn't start the challenge until New Year's Day, so my personal streak is actually one day longer than my streak for the Challenge. Over my lunch break I went down to the fitness center at my work and did my Tempo Run from my half marathon training plan. I did a 1 mile warm up @ 9:42, 4 tempo miles @ 8:17, then a 1 mile cool down @ 9:37. Total of 6 miles in 52:27 (8:50 avg pace). At least that's what the tr...

Updates, A New Friend & A FB Break

Image
Well, I've missed my last few weeks updates so I've got a lot to cover with this post. Sorry about that, not sure why I haven't been doing my updates. I've missed 3 weeks of updates & am currently in Week 8 of my Garmin Half Marathon training. I won't rehash everything from those missed updates, but suffice it to say, things have been going mostly well. I have been fighting a sinus infection which has caused a handful of missed workouts or mediocre efforts, but I've been getting it done for the most part and I continue to improve. It's been an interesting year so far & I've had some mental highs & lows already, but I'm doing my best to stay strong and continue to fight for good results; the results I really want & need to see this year. My weight graph for 1/1 to 2/20 Let's start with my overall feelings of how things are going. As most of you will recall, last year I had the goal of running my first 50 miler last fall and...

Training Log Week 4: Garmin Half Marathon Training...

Image
I'm a bit late getting my Week 4 wrap up done, but here it is! It wasn't spectacular, but it was good and I had some fun along the way. I was still working on coming back from my cold that hindered week 3, so I did skip a couple workouts, but overall I think it was a successful week. Finishing this week also got me through day #27 of the 100 Days Challenge. I really feel good about the variety of workouts I had again this week and everything I accomplished. I am definitely getting stronger as the weeks go by, and that really is the point of training. There are now 12 weeks to go until the Garmin Half Marathon and I think I'm on a good track to accomplish my goal there as I am feeling and seeing the results of my hard work training. Day-by-day went as follows: Monday: 2,100 yard Endurance Drills swim; 3.1 mile treadmill run; 1 mile treadmill walk; 100 Push Ups program W2D1; Coaching Connection apt at YMCA Tuesday: 2,400 yard swim; 24.26 mile interval bike trai...

Training Log Week 3: Garmin Half Marathon Training

Image
The week that wasn't.  I got a cold on Monday and spent the rest of the week recovering from it, so my training plan went out the window for the week.  I hate missing all of that training, but you have to stay healthy, right?  Well, now I'm feeling much better and I'm ready to move on to week 4 and hoping for greater success.  I did manage to do just enough every day just to keep the 100 Days Challenge alive (getting me through day 20/100), but beyond that it was a week of laying around sick.  Monday, Wednesday & Thursday I just did some walking at work.  Tuesday & Sunday I did some good stretching.  Friday I did a yoga class and Saturday I did a spin class and core/flexibility class.  Not much accomplished, but I am feeling good again and I have plenty of time to still be plenty ready for the race, so I'm not going to fret too much about it. Really, the most exciting part of the week turned out to not be directly workout related....

Training Log Week 2: Garmin Half Marathon Training

Image
I must say, week 2 of Garmin Half Marathon training was amazing!!  I hit 100+ total miles for the first time ever AND they were very productive, quality miles!!  Week 2 has also seen me get 13 days into the 100 Days Challenge to start 2013.  Yeah, it's been a strong year so far!  Although training primarily with the focus of wanting to achieve my first sub-2 hour half marathon, I have been mixing in triathlon training, strength training, core training, etc in an attempt to get myself into better overall shape and I am seeing the results.  Not only am I seeing the results, but I'm having FAR more fun and enjoying my workouts.  I'm not getting burnt out or bored because, although working out way more time-wise than I was, I am varying my workouts so much that it is staying fresh and I'm improving in more areas than I would with just half marathon training. Here's the day-by-day of this week: Monday:  Javorek's General Fitness Weight Trainin...
